ORFORDVILLE - The Black Hawk-Darlington wrestling team punched its ticket to the sectional by winning the WIAA Division 3 Parkview regional on Saturday.
Black Hawk-Darlington outdistanced Johnson Creek 224-195 to win the seven-team regional title. Black Hawk-Darlington will wrestle Fennimore today in a Division 3 Royall sectional semifinal in Elroy.
Black Hawk-Darlington had eight wrestlers qualify for the individual Mineral Point sectional including three regional champions - Kolbe Ubersox (30-8) at 120 pounds, Tyler Mosley (16-15) at 170 and senior Taylor Evenstad (22-3) at 220.
"We are all pretty excited about it," Black Hawk-Darlington co-head coach Tom Donar said. "At the beginning of the year we looked at the regional and we knew we had a chance to win it. When I looked at the brackets, I thought we should have got more than eight. I thought we probably should have got 11 for sure. I'm satisfied with eight. It left us wanting more."
Black Hawk-Darlington has grown a lot since Dec. 11 when it lost to Fennimore 52-19.
"We lost to them early in December, but we are a different team now," Donar said of the matchup against conference rival Fennimore. "We have nine freshmen and sophomores who are more experienced."
If Black Hawk-Darlington can beat Fennimore, the Warrior-Redbirds will wrestle later tonight for the sectional championship against the winner of Cashton and New Lisbon.
The other sectional qualifiers, who finished second in the regional, for the Warrior-Redbirds are Hunter Bredeson (22-11) at 113, Grady Rielly (19-11) at 132, Lance Ubersox (25-11) at 152, senior Conrad Blosch (30-7) at 182 and junior Jacob Tuescher (22-16) at heavyweight.
Both Evenstad and Tuescher posted two pins in the regional.
In one of the most exciting matches, Rielly pulled out a nail-biting 16-14 overtime win over Parkview's Colt Peterson in the semifinals.
Pecatonica-Argyle, which finished fourth as a team in the regional, qualified three for the sectional in Mineral Point on Saturday. Pecatonica-Argyle's Casey Phillips (25-11) at 126 and Lucas Gilbertson (12-15) at 195 were both regional champions. Teammate Owen Aerts (170) took second to also qualify for the sectional.
