MINERAL POINT - The Black Hawk boys basketball team kept its unbeaten record intact with a 57-43 win over Platteville in the Mineral Point Holiday tournament Thursday, Dec. 26.
Black Hawk junior Heath Butler scored a game-high 25 points and drilled three 3-pointers. Black Hawk senior Tyler Peterson added 11 points and he also made three 3-pointers.
Black Hawk (5-0, 3-0 Six Rivers East) led by just two points at the half. The Warriors outscored the Hillmen 16-8 in the third quarter and 32-20 in the second half.
"In the first half we had nine turnovers and about seven or eight of them were because we were not doing the basketball fundamentals," Black Hawk coach Corey Manlick said. "At the half we told them to be patient and settle down. The kids responded well in the second half."
The Warriors were 11 of 13 from the free throw line. Black Hawk senior Brett Lovelace scored nine points and senior Seth Butler chipped in eight points.
Black Hawk will play Mineral Point (8-0) in the championship at 7:30 p.m. today.
"It's a great early season test for us," Manlick said of Mineral Point. "They kind of remind me of the team we had last year. There are five guys you have to guard on the court at all times."
Mineral Point 80, Juda 39
The Pointers jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and rolled past Juda 80-39. The Pointers outscored the Panthers 22-10 in the second quarter to build a 22-point lead at the half.
Juda's Matt Schmitt scored a team-high 19 points and junior Cory Segner added 15 points.
"They just out-hustled us," Juda coach James Pickett said. "They beat us down the floor and our team defense was not what it needs to be."
Juda (0-7, 0-3) will play Platteville in a consolation game at 6 p.m. today.
