POTOSI - Argyle junior Jenna Langmeier made free throws when it mattered most to lead the Orioles to a season-opening 58-55 win over Six Rivers West Conference rival Potosi Friday, Nov. 29.
With Argyle leading by one point, Langmeier made two free throws with eight seconds left to give the Orioles a 58-55 lead.
The Chieftains pushed the ball up the court and Potosi sophomore Maddie Hawes' 3-pointer was blocked by Argyle senior Jessica Treuthardt to seal the win. Hawes finished with a game-high 31 points.
"Jess did a nice job of getting over the top of a screen and getting two fingers on the ball," Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said. "She made a really nice defensive play."
The Orioles made 14 of 24 free throws and 6 of 9 in the fourth quarter.
"We made some free throws down the stretch and we took the air out of the ball when we needed to," Ritschard said.
Argyle junior Kylie Johnsen scored a team-high 16 points and Langmeier added 12 points.
Potosi was the Six Rivers West Conference co-champion along with Benton-Shullsburg last year.
"It was a really good win for us," Ritschard said. "They are one of the top teams in the area. I think we proved that we could play and beat one of the top teams. It will give us a lot of momentum going forward."
Rio 51, Albany 19
RIO - The Albany girls basketball team lost a non-conference game to Rio 51-19 Tuesday.
Rio jumped out to a 12-2 lead before the Comets battled back and scored 10 points in the second quarter. Albany (0-2) trailed by 12 points at the half. Rio blew the game open in the third quarter by outscoring the Comets 16-1.
Albany sophomore Marley Malkow scored seven points to lead the Comets and teammate Felicia Conley added five points.
"It just comes down to execution," Albany coach Adam Wamsley said. "We have been having a hard time putting the ball in the basket and protecting the basketball. We got back in it and made it competitive in the second quarter. We just let it get out of hand in the second half."
