Argyle bashes Monroe, Wiota rolls

WIOTA - Merill Brunson went 3-for-3 to help lead the Wiota break out of a hitting slump to knock off Shullsburg-Benton 11-2 in a Home Talent League game Sunday.

Wiota (7-4) scored four runs in the first inning to set the tone. Wiota's Kory Tuescher singled and Brunson drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Jeff Solberg and Brad Schliem followed with singles. Rooney Janecke added to the lead with an RBI single. The Indians scored the third run of the inning on an error by Shullsburg-Benton. Jay Haldiman then followed with an RBI single to give the Indians a 4-0 lead. The Indians finished with 15 hits as a team. Janecke and Haldiman were each 3-for-5. Schliem went 2-for-3 and Tuescher was 2-for-4.

"We have been struggling at the plate," Wiota co-manager Dick Schliem said. "I hope we are starting to come around again."

Despite the strong offensive performance, the Indians still left 14 runners on base.

"That is a concern," Schliem said. "Sometimes you just have to give the pitcher credit."

Ben Conway started and pitched six innings to earn the win. He gave up one run on five hits. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk. Solberg pitched three innings in relief and gave up one run on three hits. He struck out two and walked two.



Argyle 13, Monroe 1

MONROE - Dylan Schwitz and Travis Erickson combined drove in seven runs to lead Argyle past Monroe 13-1 in seven innings

Argyle remained on top in first place in the South Division of the Western Section with the win. Erickson went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Schwitz was 2-for-5 with four RBI. Argyle's Drew Nafzger and Justin Crotty were each 2-for-4 to lead the Beavers' 13-hit attack. With the win, Argyle improves to 9-2 and Monroe drops to 3-8.

Platteville 3, Blanchardville 2

PLATTEVILLE - Nathan Wallenhorst and Jake Green combined tossed a four-hitter for Platteville to edge Blanchardville 3-2.

Platteville scored the game-winning run on an error in the seventh inning.

Blanchardville pitcher Dave Cleary pitched eight innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked five.
