The eighth-grade Blaze met their toughest opponent of the season on Saturday, Oct. 5 in New Glarus-Monticello and the game ended in a tie at 8.
The offense fought hard to get things moving for the team but ran into the New Glarus-Monticello defensive wall. Both quarterbacks, Jonah Tostrud and Dylan Scace fought hard the entire game handing off and passing the ball to Nick Quinn, Mitch Bartelt, Sam Kind, Brayden Zettle, David Keegan and Dempzy Foley.
With one minute left in the first half, Zettle intercepted the ball and ran it back 45 yards for a touchdown. Foley then added two with a successful PAT.
The eighth grade Blaze now are 3-0-1 so far this season. Next week, they will host McFarland Blue at 8:30 a.m.
Seventh Grade White
The Blaze seventh grade White lost another physical defensive battle to McFarland Navy 8-0.
The Blaze lost the ball on a fumble on the first play of the game but eventually stopped McFarland from scoring with a goal line stand from the 2-yard line and took over on downs.
Most of the second half was played in the middle of the field until McFarland scored with 2:33 left in the game on a run around the outside with multiple missed tackles by the Blaze. They kicked extra point made the score 8-0.
The Blaze then drove the length of the field with the passing game but did not score from inside the McFarland 5-yard line and gave the ball up on downs with 20 seconds left in the game.
The Blaze play at home Saturday, Oct. 12 during a fundraiser event against Sun Prairie Sacred Heart at 11 a.m.
Seventh Grade Red
New Glarus-Monticello beat the Blaze seventh grade Red team 45-16.
Monroe did have all players back from injuries and illness with the exception of one. On the first drive of the game, the Blaze made it down to the 8-yard line but couldn't punch it in.
The Blaze tied the score 8-8 on a 50-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. However, Monroe turned the ball over three times on six fumbles, which only gave the Blaze seven offensive plays in the second half.
One of those seven offensive plays was a 60-yard touchdown pass play near the end of the game, which was the team's first passing touchdown of the season.
The seventh grade Red team plays at home on Saturday, October 12 at 10 a.m.
Sixth Grade Red
The Monroe Blaze sixth grade Red had a dominating day on both sides of the ball en route to a 29-0 win over McFarland Navy.
On the opening drive, the offense drove right down and scored. Led by Conner Andrews, Dalton Green, Cody Hagemann, Corey Shafer, Bodie Minder and Alejandro Hernandez, the line plowed their way to the end zone for Alex Witt to punch it in.
On defense, the Blaze shut the McFarland team down from the first snap by not allowing a first down until late in the fourth quarter.
On offense, the tight ends, receivers and running backs ran all over the muddy field. Travis Edmunds scored twice on lead by blocks from Derrick Ritschard and Brandon Blum. Blum also scored, bulldozing his way to the end zone.
The defense limited McFarland to 17 yards of total offense. The defense had nine sacks, including two key sacks at the end of the game.
Sixth Grade White
The Blaze sixth grade White team traveled to McFarland on a sloppy Saturday, Oct. 5 and were defeated 16-6 by McFarland White.
After a Nick Bansley 74-yard touchdown run to put Monroe up 6-0, turnovers and undisciplined first quarter defense doomed Monroe, giving up a long touchdown drive and a long touchdown run to McFarland.
Turnovers plagued Monroe throughout the game. Monroe had four fumbles (two lost) and two interceptions that stymied scoring drives.
Monroe forced two turnovers on fumble recoveries by Logan Leuzinger and Julian Gruber. Having multiple tackle games were Connor Allen, Bansley, Darien Hargrove, Deion Hargrove, Jared Dillon and Ben Figi. Dusty Gough Gruber and Leuzinger.
The sixth grade White looks to get back on track against Madison Memorial Green at home on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Fifth Grade
The Monroe Blaze fifth graders had a heart-breaking 14-12 road loss to St. Francis Black in Cross Plains Saturday, Oct. 5.
Cross Plains scored on a fourth down circus catch with 39 seconds left in the game to tie. They then kicked the PAT to win by 2.
Monroe's two scores came on a long pass reception and run after catch. The Blaze also scored on a very long run that materialized on third-and-20 situation.
Fourth Grade
The fourth grade Blaze football team took out their frustration with last week's loss out on Verona Black, by beating the previously undefeated team 27-8 on a wet, muddy field in Verona.
The fourth graders came out fired up by scoring first in the second quarter with a 53-yard touchdown run by fullback Floyd Wells. Garret Voegeli added the extra point on a 5-yard run to make it 8-0. Verona then tied the score on their next possession with a 70-yard end around to tie the score at 8-8.
Monroe answered with Floyd Wells on their next possession. Wells took a handoff up the middle for a 63-yard touchdown run, gave Monroe a 15-8 lead at the half.
The fourth graders continued their stellar play in the second half as Carson Leuzinger stripped the ball right out of the opponent's hands and returned it for a 45-yard touchdown return.
The final score of the game for the fourth graders was a perfectly executed pass from Leuzinger to Blake Mueller for 33-yards.
Wells led the way with 132 yards. The team attempted 30 rushes for 179 yards and had one pass completion.
Defensively is where the entire team shined. The fourth graders frustrated the Verona team and forced three turnovers, led by Leuzinger's strip of the ball and Lucas Broitzman's interception.
The fourth graders will play St. Francis on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 12:30 p.m. in Cross Plains.
