Steven Roger Elmer, age 70 of Monroe, died unexpectedly at home in his sleep on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.
Steve was born on October 10, 1951 in Monroe to Roger and Ruth (Fritzenmeier) Elmer. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1969, the University of Wisconsin in 1973, and the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1980.
Steve devoted his professional life to serving his community. He was a City of Monroe police officer from 1973-1977, Green County Undersheriff from 1981-1985, and Sheriff of Green County from 1985-1994. From 1999 until his retirement in 2018, Steve was a Professor of Criminal Justice at UW-Platteville, where he shared his experience with the next generation of law enforcement professionals. His students appreciated his formidable knowledge, supportive nature, approachability, and the pizza party they were guaranteed on the last day of every semester. Steve also practiced law in Monroe and served as Lafayette County Corporation Counsel.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marilyn Holm of Brodhead, and two aunts, Clara and Louise Fritzenmeier of Freeport, Il.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Paula, their two sons, Steven of Menomonee Falls and Jonathan (Acacia) of Reedsville, one grandson, and extended family.
In addition to spending time with his wife and sons, Steve enjoyed maintaining the family's 19th century home, flying his Piper Cherokee from the Monroe Airport, and backpacking, fishing, and canoeing. He also vacationed nearly every year in Colorado with his family. Earlier in life, Steve volunteered with the Green County EMS. He was a life-long member of St. John’s United Church of Christ.
A visitation will be held on Monday, November 8th from 5-7 pm at SHRINER HAGER GOHLKE Funeral Home in Monroe.
On Tuesday, November 9th, continued visitation will be held at St. John's United Church of Christ from 10-11 am, followed by a funeral service, at the church; and interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Green County EMS, Monroe Clinic and Hospital Foundation, or to St. John's United Church of Christ.
