Rolland E. “Rollie” Karlen, age 87 of Monroe, died Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the Monroe Clinic Hospice Home. Rollie was born on June 1, 1931 in Monroe, the son of Fred C. Karlen Jr. and Marie H. Feldt. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1949 and married Elaine Kammerud on February 23, 1952 at St. Victor Catholic Church. Rollie was proud that he was able to work in the insurance business his entire life. He was a member of Saint Clare of Assisi Parish and throughout the years he was active in many activities including the Jaycees, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, toastmasters, Monroe Moose, Cheese Days committee, and the Green County Fair Board (past secretary). He was also involved in raising funds for the Monroe Hospital and helping establish the original EMS.
Rollie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elaine Karlen of Monroe; two daughters, Mary (Angelo) Karlen Lekas of Algonquin, IL, and Elizabeth (Robert) Stormont of Hartland, WI; four grandchildren, Alexander C. (Samira) Stormont of Woodbury, MN, Ellen Stormont of Waukesha, James (Sarah) Stormont of Pewaukee, and Alexandra (Justin) Lundsteen of Pingree Grove, IL; two great grandchildren, Linden Bauer and Charlie Stormont; and his sister, Virginia Drafahl of Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph; and a brother-in-law, Cal Drafahl.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church with Monsignor Larry Bakke officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe. The family will greet friends at a luncheon at the Monroe Moose Lodge following the service. Memorials are suggested in Rollie’s name to the American Heart Association or the Monroe Moose Lodge. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
