Michael Vernon Kammes, Sr. age 90, of Davis, IL passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born the eldest son of Michael and Margaret (Kramer) Kammes on May 17, 1932 in Winfield, IL. Mike was united in marriage to Bernadette Brinlee on April 8,1961 in Bartlett, IL. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War from 1953-55. He was honored with a trip to Washington DC with his son, Chris, for the Badger Honor Flight.
Mike was a farmer all of his life. He and Bernadette settled in rural Juda, where they raised their family and ran their farm. Mike was an avid bowler; he also enjoyed watching sports, he was a fan of the Packers, White Sox, and the Bulls. He also loved to fish and took numerous trips to Alaska salmon fishing; he enjoyed the drive and loved seeing the mountains along the way. He always made sure to share whatever he caught with friends and family. He also enjoyed going hunting, and became fond of bow hunting in his later years. He was also a longtime member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor’s Catholic Church.
Mike is survived by his wife, Bernadette of Davis; children, Monica (Dan) Fisher of Brodhead, Michael (Pam Pehl) Kammes, Jr. of Juda, Regina (Bill Orlowski) Kammes of Milwaukee, and Christopher (Troy Cleary) Kammes of Briggsville; 6 grandchildren, Tara Kammes, Michael (Abby Rojel) Kammes III, Chris Kammes, Jr., Garrett (Erin Kettle) Fisher, Ben (Lacey) Kammes, and Matthew (Rochelle Church) Fisher; 4 great-grandchildren, Aubrie Voegeli, Madelyn Moede, Ethan Kammes, and Henry Fisher; siblings, Robert Kammes, Barb Hill, and John (Rosemary) Kammes; sister-in-law, Barbara Brinlee; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Smith; brother, Leonard Kammes; sister-in-law, Mira Kammes, and nephews, Ed and Jeff Myers.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11AM on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor’s Catholic Church with Father Tafadzwa Kushamba as celebrant. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery following the mass and luncheon at the church.
Visitation will be held from 9AM until the time of service on Saturday at the church.
