Marilyn F. Wells, age 95, of Monroe, died Monday, April 10, 2023 at the SSM Hospice Home in Monroe. She was born November 13, 1927 to Herman and Bessie (Riese) Disch. Her great grandmother, Sybilla Luchsinger, and family, immigrated to the United States in the mid 1800's. Marilyn was very proud of her Swiss heritage. She attended schools in Monroe and graduated from Monroe High School in 1945. Marilyn and George L. Wells, high school sweethearts, were married on January 26, 1947. They enjoyed 71 years together until George's death in 2018.
She developed a love for reading at a young age and this passion for books was instilled in her children. Marilyn especially liked historical fiction and anything "where she could learn something." She worked at Bakers Book Store in Monroe during and post high school. For 22 years, she worked part-time at the Gift Castle. There she helped people choose cards and gifts and enjoyed visiting with the numerous shoppers and tourists.
Marilyn was an avid and excellent bridge player, belonging to long term bridge clubs throughout the years. She and George also enjoyed taking long walks together. Marilyn belonged to St. Johns UCC, the Naomi Circle, Monroe Jaycettes, Monroe Womens Club and the Hospital Auxilary. Marilyn and George were members of the Monroe Country Club where she even learned to golf and participate in the Wednesday Ladies Day.
She is survived by her daughter, Ann; son, John (Diane); her grandchildren: Jennifer (Martin) Kearns, Elizabeth (Curt Metzger), Michael (Katie) Wells, Stephanie (John Shriver) and Austin (Bethany Hofer); Great grandchildren: Wesley, Bradley, Riley and Valerie Metzger, Allison and Jameson Kearns, Owen and Colten Shriver, and Jeremiah and Josiah Wells. One of her traditions was to send each grandchild a special Christmas tree ornament each year.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, George; son, Michael and his wife, Valerie Wells; parents; and brother, William.
