MONROE - Vehicular homicide charges have been filed in the alleged drunk driving crash that killed a Browntown man in August.
Maquita Quvonda C. Stokes, 30, Rockford, was tentatively charged at first with driving while intoxicated but now faces Class D felony counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and vehicular homicide with a prohibited blood-alcohol concentration, plus Class F felony counts of injury by the intoxicated use of a vehicle and vehicular injury with a prohibited blood-alcohol concentration.
The charges were filed Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Green County Circuit Court.
The homicide charges are for the death of the other driver, Antone C. Grawehr, 81. The injury charges are for Grawehr's wife Alma D. Grawehr, 82, who sustained a wrist fracture in the crash, and for Stokes' passenger Charlotte M. Jones, 41, whose arm was fractured.
Stokes' son, 3, was also in her 2006 Chevy Trailblazer SUV at the time of the crash, but no serious injuries are reported for him.
According to the criminal complaint and accompanying reports:
The Grawehrs were on their way home from their son's wedding in Milwaukee shortly after 10 p.m., headed westbound on Wis. 81 just south of Brodhead, when Stokes' eastbound SUV swerved over the center line and collided head-on with their 2004 silver Dodge Caravan.
A deputy on scene reported an "overwhelming smell of intoxicants" coming from Stokes' SUV and found an open 24-ounce bottle of Miller Light inside. Stokes blood-alcohol content, based on a blood draw taken about three hours later, was more than the 0.08 percent legal limit.
Antone Grawehr, aka Tony Grawehr, died at the scene of cardiac arrest after the force of the crash crushed his legs, broke his ribs, fractured his pelvis and left him with multiple internal lacerations and heart injuries.
His wife told an officer he had declined an offer of wine at the wedding because he knew he'd be driving home.
"She remembers him saying something about (how) he had to drive home so he was not going to drink it," the deputy reported.
The accident also seriously injured Stokes, who was flown by Medflight helicopter to a Rockford hospital.
Her initial appearance in court is set for Dec. 9.
