MONROE - Michael Wolff has been raising funds for the Green County Alzheimer's Walk for five years as a member of the Pleasant View Nursing and Re-habilitation team and his move to Mission, South Dakota, last year has not dulled his enthusiasm for the event. The walk supports direct programs and services offered by the Alzheimer's and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW) for people diagnosed with a dementia disease and their care partners.
Wolff was employed by Pleasant View until he moved to South Dakota in 2014 to become pastor at a rural church. He said he walks in memory of his father who passed away 20 years ago and his mother, who was diagnosed with dementia three years ago.
To date, Wolff has raised almost $10,000, including $2,260 toward his goal of $2,500 this year. Last year, he walked in Mission on the same day of the Green County event. He will be attending this year's walk on Saturday. The walk will be held at the Behring Senior Center, 1113 10th St. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by a one- or two-milk walk.
Alzheimer's disease affects almost 120,000 people in Wisconsin.
ADAW is involved in a number of programs and initiatives that directly impact residents in Monroe and Green County including:
passage of legislation establishing Wisconsin's Silver Alert program in 2014;
involvement in Monroe's Dementia Friendly Community initiative with the Aging and Disability Resource Center; and
the third annual Understanding and Coping with the Challenges of Alzheimer's and Dementia conference scheduled for Nov. 5 at Monroe United Methodist Church, featuring Erin Bonitto, an internationally known educator and dementia communication coach.
