MONROE - The Green County Treasurer's office, in conjunction with the Wisconsin County Treasurer's Association, is dedicating the week of May 13-17 to verifying that all eligible property owners received the lottery credit on their 2012 tax bills.
Last year, the average lottery credit in Green County was about $100. The exact amount is based on the school district where homes are located.
To qualify for the lottery and gaming credit, an owner must be a Wisconsin resident, the owner of the dwelling and use the dwelling as their primary residence as of the certification date (Jan. 1, 2012). If temporarily absent, typically for a period no longer than six months, it is the home to which the owner returns. Principal dwelling means any dwelling used by the owner of the dwelling as his/her primary residence. A property owner may claim only one primary residence.
If an eligible property owner did not receive the credit, the treasurer's office will help complete the paperwork and file the forms with the Department of Revenue to claim the late lottery credit and ensure that the credit is applied to the 2013 tax bill.
The county provided a link on the Green County website, www.co.green.wi.gov, with instructions that will help determine if the lottery credit was received.
The lottery credit can only be obtained by having a signed application on file. Those who did not receive the credit and meet the qualifications can follow instructions to file for the late lottery credit; call the treasurer's office at 608-328-9435; or email shawkins@greencountywi.org.
Those who were not a resident of a property on Jan. 1, 2012 but were as of Jan. 1, 2013, may qualify for the credit on their 2013 tax bill. The 2013 application can be found on the county's website, www.co.green.wi.gov, by clicking on "2013 lottery Credit Application."
