BELMONT - The University of Wisconsin-Extension will hold a grain production and market update meeting on projected corn and soybean losses from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 18, at the Convention Center/ Banquet Hall in Belmont, north of U.S. 151 (exit 26) at 102 W. Mound View Road.

Crop projections for 2016 show $40 to $140 per acre losses for farm operations preparing for the 2016 growing season. Some land rental rates and farms with additional input requirements will see even greater losses. The popular farm press is urging farmers to "scrutinize" every input in an effort to minimize costs.

The meeting will focus on input decisions and strategies to reduce these projected losses.

Ted Bay, UW-Extension crops and farm management agent for Grant and Lafayette counties, will present a cost outlook for 2016 with a look at individual crop inputs to determine where cuts can be made to reduce losses and where cuts should not be made to avoid reducing yield. He also will review a flexible land lease option that adjusts rental rates to reflect changes in grain yield and grain price.

Dr. Brenda Boetel, UW-Extension marketing specialist, will provide a corn and soybean market situation report and price outlook.

Dr. Paul Mitchell, UW-Extension ag economics specialist, will look at management strategies that can be adopted to address low returns when market prices are below cost of production.

Kevin Raisbeck, market president with Wisconsin Bank & Trust, will provide a lender's perspective on borrowing strategy when returns are negative.

Call to register to assure adequate handouts and lunch for all attending. The lunch is being sponsored by Wisconsin Bank & Trust. Register by calling the Lafayette County Extension office at 608-776-4820 or the Grant County Extension office at 608-723-2125.
