Tour de Cheese slated for Oct. 6

MONROE - Tour de Cheese, a fundraiser which benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters, is scheduled to take place Saturday, Oct. 6.

The fundraiser, which will celebrate local cheese industry and supports tourism, will start at the Merit Center, 2955 2nd St. Riders can check in from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

The 15-mile and 47-mile rides are fully supported until 2 p.m. Route maps will be supplied during the fundraiser. Rest stops will offer sandwiches, cheeses, fruit and drinks. Intersection guards help keep riders safe and answer questions. Two repair trucks will drive the route in case a bike breaks down and needs repair or transportation.

During the fundraiser, people can choose to ride to Twin Groves and back (15 miles) or continue to Juda, Albany, Monticello and back to Monroe (47 miles).

Rest stops include Maple Leaf Cheese, Twin Groves; Grande Cheese Company, Juda; and Silver Lewis Cheese Factory, Monticello. Rest stops will feature cheese made at local cheese factories.

This year, dairy queens and beef princesses will help celebrate the local dairy industry by presiding at cheese factories and rest stops.

Money raised through Tour de Cheese directly funds Big Brothers Big Sisters' mentoring programs in Green County. Big Brothers Big Sisters is donor supported and volunteer driven.

Riders can register by Wednesday, Sept. 26 for $40 which will include a T-shirt. After Sept. 26, the cost is $45. To register, visit www.bbbsgreencounty.org/tourdecheese or call (608) 325-7855.
