MONROE - Spring yard cleanup is underway.
The City of Monroe has added two Wednesdays a month to the schedule for free drop-offs to help residents tackle yard waste.
The city has a set of requirements for yard waste in order for it to be picked up.
Place grass in a clear bag, attach a yard waste sticker, and it will be picked up on regular refuse collection days, or bring it to the Monroe Street Department for free.
The Street Department will be taking material 7 a.m. to noon: April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, Aug. 21, Sept.18 and Oct. 16. The city also has added Wednesdays to the drop-off schedule. Material can be left at the Street Department from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: April 7, 28; May 5 and 26; June 9 and 30; July 7 and 28; Aug. 11 and 25; Sept. 8 and 29; and Oct. 6 and 27.
The city is also picking up fallen branches from an ice storm that hit the city in December. Any manageable length of fallen branches can be placed on terrace for pick up.
Crews are currently working north to south through the city to gather damaged branches. No deadline has been set, but the sooner residents can get branches out to the street, the better, said Tom Boll, Street Department supervisor.
The City of Monroe Storm Water Utility and Street Department remind residents it is against city codes to deposit things like grass clippings, leaves, dirt and limbs into the street. When it rains, the debris washes into the storm inlets causing back-ups or run-off into streams.
The only time leaves are permitted to be placed in the gutter is in the fall during scheduled leaf collections.
Contact the Street Department at 329-2490 for assistance.
