Stalled buses delay start at Black Hawk school

SOUTH WAYNE - Bitterly cold temperatures kept Black Hawk school children home an extra two hours this morning after school buses wouldn't start.

Three of the district's eight buses wouldn't start this morning, said Black Hawk High School Principal Jerry Mortimer. One the buses has a problem with its alternator, but he said he's not sure why the other two buses didn't start. Rather than risk having children wait in the cold, the district delayed school for two hours to allow time to get the buses started.

Drivers for the district's eight routes keep the vehicles at their homes throughout the district. Buses are diesel and are plugged in at night.

But it could be temperatures overnight were just too cold: Mortimer said his thermometer registered 14 degrees below zero this morning.

Al's Trucking in Darlington provides bus maintenance for the district and will be checking the buses over, Mortimer said.
