SHULLSBURG - A Shullsburg man was killed in a motor vehicle crash in New Diggins Township Saturday morning.
Joseph L Shepherd, 70, was killed in the accident, which occurred at about 10 a.m. on Aetna Road, about a mile west of Palfrey Road in New Diggings Township.
Benton First Response, Benton Fire Department personnel, Hazel Green EMS and sheriff's deputies responded to the scene.
Shepherd was westbound on Aetna Road in his 2000 Buick four-door sedan when it went out of control onto the right ditch line/shoulder, re-entered, crossed the roadway and struck an embankment along the south side of Aetna Road before coming to a stop, according to a news release from the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department.
Shepherd was taken by Hazel Green EMS to a Dubuque hospital where he died several hours later. Preliminary medical findings indicated the possibility that a "personal health emergency" may have contributed to Shepherd's death, according to the sheriff's department.
At the time of this crash, Aetna Road, like many other secondary roads in the area, was ice covered and slippery due to overnight weather conditions. Township roadway maintenance personnel had not yet reached that section of roadway.
This investigation is continuing and an autopsy has been requested.
