MONROE - Monroe police, along with the Lafayette County and Green County sheriffs' departments, assisted the State Line Area Narcotics Team (SLANT) and at least two other agencies in a drug raid on an apartment building in the 2700 block of 9th Street Monday night, according to Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley.

The raid took place at about 8 p.m. Kelley said the raid was drug-related, but would not specify the type or amount of drugs involved, or who the agencies were looking for.

More than 20 officers searched one apartment inside the complex. As of about 9 p.m., no arrests had been made, Kelley said.

Some of the officers around the apartment complex were wearing riot-type gear. The number of officers used to raid only one apartment in the complex was due to number of people living in the complex and the size of the potential search area, Kelley said.

"Sometimes the area of the operation dictates the need for officers," he said.

The raid also included a helicopter from one of the agencies involved, but Kelley would not identify which one provided it. The helicopter allowed the officers to be able to see a larger perimeter in case somebody tried to flee the scene, he said.

Kelley also declined to name two of the agencies involved because his department was not leading the investigation. Kelley would not name the agency leading the investigation.

The narcotics team includes agents from the Monroe Police Department, the Green County Sheriff's Department, the Stephenson County Sheriff's Department, the Rockford, Ill. Police Department, the Freeport Police Department, the Loves Park, Ill. Police Department and the Illinois State Police.

Any new information on the raid would need to come from the agency leading the investigation because the Monroe Police Department is only assisting in the process, Kelley said. He didn't anticipate any new details until possibly today at the earliest.
