MONTICELLO - A three-hour search of the village turned up no leads after an 8-year-old girl reported seeing a suspicious male carrying what appeared to be a long gun Tuesday evening, Sept. 25.

No shots were fired, and there is no evidence of an immediate danger to the community, said Monticello Police Chief Tom Erb.

The alleged long gun "could be a stick for all we know," he said.

The initial report came from the mother of the 8-year-old girl. The girl told law enforcement she saw a heavyset man with blondish-colored hair walking in the 300 block of South Main Street, pick up what appeared to be a long gun-like object in the grass and then walk toward an apartment complex on Garfield Street.

At about 7:30 p.m., a search team from the Green County Sheriff's Department was called in to help Monticello Police search for the suspect.

The search was called off at about 10:30 p.m. after an extensive search of the neighborhood and the apartment building, according to Sheriff Jeff Skatrud.

There were no other reports of a similar subject in the area as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Erb.
