Residents with flood damage should call emergency management

MONROE - Green County Emergency Management is asking Green County residents to call them if they have had flooding or other damages to their home and property from the flooding that began on July 19, according to a news release.

Gov. Scott Walker issued a state of emergency for Green County and 19 other counties. But this does not mean that a federal declaration was applied for, according to the release. Counties need to show the state how impacted their residents and municipalities are from this flooding before an application can be made.

Even if you think your damages may be minor, every report is helpful. Call 328-9470 to report your damages. If FEMA assistance is not awarded there may be other programs that become available, such as low interest loans to help cover the repair costs.

Residents must keep accurate records of their damages. Pictures are essential. Keep all receipts of items that you purchased, such as new drywall, equipment rentals and carpet cleaners. If you have to throw out carpet or appliances, take a picture of them as well.

It is important to remove any mold that is growing, and you may have to treat the area several times. Use a mixture of a half cup of bleach and one quart of water or buy mildew cleaner. If you have allergies or other health problems, you may want to consider hiring a cleaning service.

Red Cross is providing clean-up kits at no charge. The kits include a bucket with bleach, scrub brushes and rubber gloves. They can be picked up at the Green County Sheriff's Office or the Green County Health Department.
