BRODHEAD — A 35-year-old Brodhead man with previous felony convictions in the state has been charged with multiple sex offenses after he allegedly fondled a teenage girl at a local outdoor swimming spot.
The defendant also has been charged in the past with failing to maintain his status on the state’s sex offender registry.
David. A. Scofield Jr. is charged with exposing intimate parts to a child, a Class I Felony, attempted 3rd degree sexual assault, a Class G Felony, and misdemeanor 4th degree sexual assault. The victim was a 17-year-old girl.
According to the criminal complaint, the incident happened on a hot day July 30 in the Town of Decatur, at Headgates Park on the Sugar River. There, he allegedly engaged in horseplay with the girl in the water and fondled her breasts and tried to put his hand inside her suit but was unsuccessful. He also allegedly kissed her repeatedly even though she did not return his affection.
“She swam away to a dock, where he kissed her again,” the complaint said.
At one point, the complaint says, she tried to swim away from Scofield and to be closer to her friends who were there with her.
“She was going to go to the rocks to climb out and back up on the dam,” the complaint said. “Dave was already by the dock and told her to come there.”
The defendant is no stranger to the legal system in this part of the state.
