BRODHEAD - An investigation into roughly 10 thefts from cars throughout the city from the evening of Jan. 19 to Jan. 24 has identified a suspect who the Brodhead Police Department hopes to soon turn over to the Green County district attorney.
Deputy Chief Trevor Long said Wednesday the department has been working in conjunction with the Portage Police Department to identify a likely culprit after authorities there noted similar incidents.
Reports of a string of thefts began at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 20 when Brodhead Police were notified that items had been taken from a vehicle in the 700 block of 8th Street. Soon, other reports came in until just before noon that day; six in total. Locations varied from the 700 block of 8th Street, the 600 block of East 5th Avenue, the 800 block of East 2nd Avenue and the 1300 block of West 2nd Avenue.
Then came more calls. Just before 6 p.m. on Jan. 21, police were called to the 700 block of East 3rd Avenue for theft from a vehicle. A day later, two separate calls on that same street were reported just before 11 a.m. Another vehicle was reported burglarized around 8 p.m. on Jan. 24.
"Basically, people leave for work on Monday, get in their car, and realize 'oh, the change is missing' and other things like that," Long said.
He noted that no damage had been done to vehicles. The thieves had simply accessed vehicles along the street which were unlocked.
The "ultimate goal" of the department would be to recommend charges against the suspect to Green County District Attorney Craig Nolen, he added. Long said the investigation remains ongoing.
