MONROE - Police are investigating reports that two young men were assaulted on the city's south side in separate incidents Wednesday, Oct. 3.
At 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to Monroe Clinic's ER to take reports from the two victims, a 17-year-old Monroe male and a 20-year-old Argyle male. The two young men are friends.
According to accounts filed with police:
At about 4:45 p.m., the 17-year-old was in the 2600 block of 14th Avenue, near Monroe High School, when a muscular man in a black T-shirt and black ski mask jumped out of a black SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe, and punched him. Immediately after throwing the punch, the suspect left in the SUV.
Around the same time, the 20-year-old was in the 1900 block of 15th Avenue, near Lincoln Park, when a man in a black hoodie, black ski mask and black gloves with red fingertips punched him and then immediately took off on a bicycle.
A few hours later, after meeting up and comparing notes, the two friends decided to get their minor injuries checked out and report the alleged assaults.
There are no indications so far that these were robbery attempts.
Police are investigating to see if the two incidents may be related and are seeking witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call dispatch at (608) 329-2400.
"There's a lot of unanswered questions," said Police Chief Fred Kelley.
