MONTICELLO - The weather improved just in time for a fun-filled outing at the Fisheree held Sunday on Lake Montesian. The turnout was better than usual, according to Maynard Hefty, Monticello Lions Club member and event chairman.
"It was a very nice day," Hefty said. "We some avid ice fishermen in shanties. Others," he observed, "just sat on buckets."
It was a three-generation family outing for one family. Kent "Papa" Brauer and his wife, Nancy, of Dayton enjoyed the event with their daughter, Catrina Emberson, and her two children, Holly and Heather.
The action was fast and furious as the youngsters landed several "lunker" bluegills, all within a few minutes in mid-afternoon.
"You can have a lot of fun when you put kids and a fishing line together," Papa said.
Brauer displayed a nice 10-inch crappie he had snatched from beneath the ice earlier using a Mousey grub. The fish took first-place honors in the crappie division.
Kevin Pratt of Monticello was there with several relatives and friends. The son of former Lafayette County Sheriff Ken Pratt, he wanted to get the family "out of the house and away from video games." He reported catching several smaller fish.
Matt and Liz Cole of Browntown led a large contingent of family and friends to the Fisheree, including perhaps the event's youngest "angler," 14-month-old Kyle Cole.
Mike Paul of Monroe hauled in a nice Northern with the help of Kyle's older sister, Kirstin Cole, and family friend Austin Colliers.
Those arriving early enjoyed the chicken barbeque hosted by the Community Club. Others feasted on brats, hot dogs and chili offered by Cherri Bell and Nancy Elmer of the Lions Club.
In addition to the Lions and Community Club, the Green County Conservation League sponsored the event. League President Kim Christen and fellow GCCL member Ron Rufener handled the fish registration chores for the event, which was held for the first time in 1988.
