MONROE - More than $13 million in federal stimulus money is headed to seven Wisconsin airports, but Monroe's is not among them.

The Legislature's budget-writing committee on Tuesday approved Gov. Jim Doyle's request to direct the money to the airports for runway improvements and other upgrades. About $1.1 billion was available for airports in the federal economic stimulus.

Monroe Municipal Airport received an $80,000 grant from the state April 16 to crackseal and sealcoat the 5,100-foot main runway pavement. That work is scheduled to be completed by the end of summer.

The Madison airport will get the most, $4 million, to extend a taxiway to allow aircraft and ground service vehicles to maneuver without blocking a runway. The remaining money will go to airports in Oshkosh, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Rhinelander, Burlington and Juneau.

The projects already received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Monroe Airport Manager Kelly Finkenbinder and the board were trying to get some of the stimulus money.

Monroe Airport Board had hoped to receive some money to finish erecting a fence around the airport or another planned project.

Monroe Municipal Airport handles about 6,000 takeoffs and landings each year.
