DARLINGTON - A 30-year-old Darlington man was arrested and jailed late Friday on a charge of embezzling nearly $55,000 from the Darlington Community Fire Department.
Jonathan Grossen allegedly stole $47,284 from the donation accounts of the Darlington Fire Department and a check for $7,393 from the Darlington Fire Commission between June 2009 and March 2012, while a volunteer firefighter and membership treasurer, according to an investigation overseen by Darlington police.
Chief Jason King announced Grossen's arrest early Saturday.
Suspicious withdrawals from the fire commission's accounts, made during Grossen's time as treasurer, were discovered after Grossen was not re-elected treasurer and his term ended in March, according to King.
An eight-week police investigation found Grossen made 66 unauthorized withdrawals totaling more than $47,000 from the fire department during his three years as treasurer. He is also accused of stealing a check for $7,398 from the Darlington Fire Commission. The check has since been recovered and deposited in its proper account.
The $47,284 that remains missing were donations to the fire department, and not tax dollars, King reports.
Grossen has no prior criminal record in Wisconsin, according to court records. Theft charges stemming from the alleged embezzlement have yet to be filed against him in Lafayette County Circuit Court.
