MONROE - Cash bond was set at $20,000 Tuesday, July 31, for an Albany man charged the same day with sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl.
Derek Joseph Grinnell, 23, made his initial appearance in front of Judge James Beer via video relay from the Green County jail.
The state considers Grinnell a serious sex offender and is seeking lifetime supervision of him.
He faces a Class B felony charge of first-degree sexual assault of a child, two Class I felony counts of exposing his genitals to a child and a Class D felony charge of child enticement involving sexual contact.
Grinnell admitted to an investigating officer that he sexually assaulted the girl earlier this week and that he has searched for and looked at child porn on the Internet, according to police reports filed with the criminal complaint.
He asked the officer to get him counseling help for his "anger and sexual urges."
Jeffrey Kohl, assistant district attorney, noted that Grinnell has no prior criminal record. He said he was requesting a substantial cash bond due to the gravity of the charges against Grinnell.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 in front of Judge Thomas Vale.
