MONROE - The Monroe Police Department is taking part in a "Booze and Belts" traffic safety campaign from Dec. 10 to Dec. 18.
During the campaign, intended to prevent drunken driving and also enforce the state's mandatory seatbelt law, officers will be "out in force," said James Kosek, Monroe Police Department captain.
The department received assistance for the program from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the Wisconsin Bureau of Transportation Safety.
Kosek said convictions for failure to fasten seatbelts exceeded 100,000 for the first time in the state's history. There were also more than 45,000 drunken driving convictions in 2009, he added.
