MONROE - The South Central Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association will present its fifth annual Gardening Symposium next month.
Titled "Gardening Inspirations for All Seasons - Going Green in Your Own Backyard," the event will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10 in Monroe. A slate of speakers will demonstrate how to implement environmentally friendly practices into local homeowners' yards and landscapes.
The keynote speaker will be gardening expert, author and TV and radio host Melinda Myers. She has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and more than 20 gardening books in publication, including "Can't Miss Small Space Gardening." Currently Myers hosts the nationally syndicated "Melinda's Garden Moment" segments which airs on more than 89 TV and radio stations throughout the U.S. and Canada. She is a columnist and contributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine and writes the twice monthly "Gardeners' Questions" newspaper column. Myers hosted "The Plant Doctor" radio program for more than 20 years as well as "Great Lakes Gardener" on PBS. Myer's topic for the symposium is "Growing Green - Environmentally Friendly Landscapes".

- "Striking Bowling Ball Garden Art": Susan Konopacki, Master Gardener volunteer
- "Roll Out the Rain Barrel": Peggy Compton, natural resource educator
- "Gardens of Stone - Expression of Our Local Environment": John Gishnock III, Formecology, LLC
- "Recycled Dishes as Garden Art": Sandy Spotts and Amy Lewis, The Potting Shed
- "Lasagna/Deep Mulch Gardening": Roger Reyonds, Infiltrating Landscapes
The SCWMGA was formed in 2004 with members from the general University of Wisconsin-Extension Master Gardening training classes. Members today live in all areas of the Green County area. Part of their mission is to support gardeners and communities with information and resources. UW-Extension Master Gardener volunteers are also available to assist homeowners with their horticulture questions through the Green County Extension Office.
The seminar is open to the public and intended for both experienced and novice gardeners. Early registration of $35 closes March 1 and then goes up to $40 for late registration and walk-ins.
The symposium will be at Peppercorn Banquets at Ludlow Mansion, 1421 Mansion Drive. Participants will receive lunch, refreshments and resource materials with their paid registration.
