MONROE - Jason Rupnow, Browntown, was surprised to learn he was voted Postal Person of the Year by the Greater Madison Area Postal Customer Council.
"I didn't even know the award existed until I won it," he said, with a laugh.
Rupnow, who has worked at the United States Post Office in Monroe for nine years, was nominated for his efforts to help The Monroe Times transition from delivery by private individuals to delivery through the U.S. Postal Service. It helped reduce customer service issues for the paper.
He was nominated for the award by Carl Hearing of Monroe Publishing LLC.
All of the approximately 2,000 postal employees in southern Wisconsin are eligible for the award, according to Karen Cronin, customer relations coordinator with the U.S. Post Office.
Rupnow learned he won the award in February.
"I came to work and (Monroe Postmaster) Dawn Obermann told me that she wanted to talk to me," he said, "that's how I learned about it."
Rupnow said his work with postal customers is just part of his job. It's a job he enjoys.
"I've been a bulk mail technician for the past four years," he said. "It's part of the job."
He works with several local businesses to help them with bulk mailings. Part of his job is to help companies take advantage of rate discounts.
He attended a Feb. 24 banquet to pick up his award.
