MONROE - Kent Kallembach took the oath of office for the vacant seat of Ward 9 on the Monroe Common Council Tuesday after council members approved his appointment unanimously.
The seat was left vacant after Mike Rivers resigned July 28. Rivers was elected to the position in April.
Mayor Bill Ross recommend Kallembach to serve out the remainder of the first year of a two-year term. A special election will be held for Ward 9 in April 2011 to fill the seat for the last year of the term.
Ross and Charles Koch, president of the council, interviewed Kallembach, who previously served as alderman; Richard Thoman, who ran against Rivers in the April election; and Chris Beer for the vacant seat. All had volunteered to serve as Ward 9 alderman until the next city election in April 2011.
Ross said he and Koch chose Kallembach because of his prior experience as an alderman and his familiarity with the city budgeting process.
Ross did not change committee members with the addition of Kallembach.
Kallembach will assume the duties assigned to Rivers as a member on the Board of Health, Board of Public Works, Community Improvement Committee, Ethics Board, Mary Wuthrich Memorial Fund Committee, Public Property Committee and Salary and Personnel Committee, and as chairman of the Claims Committee and the Monroe Municipal Park Fund.
Kallembach was previously appointed to the Ward 9 seat prior to his own term, fulfilling the term of Mike Capesius who resigned in December 2007. Kallembach served a two-year term after being elected in April 2008, but chose not to run again in 2010.
