MONROE - A Peosta, Iowa man was arrested by the Monroe Police Department after trying to cash a fake check Thursday at Woodford State Bank in Monroe.
Joseph W. Murphy, 44, was arrested for fraud against a financial institution, attempted fraud of a financial institution and a Rock County Sheriff's Department warrant about 10:30 a.m.
Murphy was jailed.
Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said Murphy went to Woodford State Bank to cash a check. A bank employee was suspicious and told Murphy he would have to wait a few minutes before the check could be cashed. A bank employee contacted the police department.
Kelley said the quick-thinking by the bank employee helped the police capture Murphy before he could commit a crime. Murphy was taken into custody in the bank parking lot, Kelley said.
Kelley wouldn't give the amount of money Murphy wrote on the check he wanted to cash.
Monroe police are working with other police departments on other cases that may involve Murphy, Kelley said.
