Insurance costs are up, down for county

MONROE - Insurance premiums for worker's compensation is becoming very expensive for the county, according to Council Clerk Michael Doyle Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Green County Board of Supervisors meeting.

Fortunately, the premium cost for liability insurance has been going down, thanks to the care taken by county employees, Doyle said.

The supervisors voted unanimously to approve the purchase of both insurance policies with Wisconsin County Mutual (Aegis Corporation) for a total of $618,000 for 2014.

The worker's compensation insurance premium will be $456,800 for next year, up more than 8 percent compared to 2013, when the county paid about $420,000. The premium in 2012 was about $381,000.

Doyle said the county is covered by Aegis Corporation, which is the only company to take the county, without going under the state plan.

Liability insurance premiums, in contrast, have fallen in the past five years. Premiums in 2010 were $186,000 and decreased to about $175,000 in 2011; $170,000 in 2012; $162,400 in 2013. For 2014, the county will pay $161,300.

Doyle said the highway department and Sheriff's department have been notably careful about incurring liability claims. The county sees its most expensive worker's compensation cases coming from the county-run nursing home, with its last big case being about $1 million, he added.
