MONROE - After a four-year search, people who want to find out about their ancestors or learn about the history of Green County will now have a place to go - the Green County Genealogical Society's Research Center.

The center is located on the north side of Monroe's Square, 1609 10th St., Suite 4.

Donna Kjendlie, president of the Green County Genealogical Society, said the center is a culmination of a four-year search for a site for the organization's records and collection of newspaper articles.

Kjendlie said people will be able to view histories of the county, townships, census records, and other items including, obituaries, wedding and engagement announcements from local newspapers. School and cemetery records are also available for research use.

There's other information at the center and Kjendlie hopes the its collection will continue to grow.

"We'd welcome family collections if they'd want to give them to us," she said.

The goal is to have another place for people who want to find information.

For the past several years, the genealogical society's records were stored in various places. That meant, basically, wherever room could be found. The organization always wanted to find a place where all of its information could be stored and made available to the public.

"We're hoping to get the word out to let people know they can come and research," Kjendlie said.

An open house for the center will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, and the third Saturday of every month. The center will also be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month.

The Green County Genealogical Society meets at 10 a.m. the first Saturday of every month on the second floor of the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave.

The society was organized in April 2001. Membership dues at $12.50 for the organization of about 90 members.
