MONROE - The Green County Rockets are headed to the Wisconsin Special Olympics State Indoor Sports Tournament after a tough battle at sectionals on Sunday in which the team lost its first game by two points but won its second.

Five-year coach Pete Condon said the Rockets' win placed them in a lottery with the chance to be chosen as one of the state competitors. He was called with the good news as the team headed back to Monroe from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

"When I got this news, we were on the bus home near New Glarus," Condon said. "When I announced it to the athletes, a big roar came up. They are really excited."

The Rockets are a part of the Wisconsin Special Olympics team basketball league. Tournament play begins each year in February.

The Rockets will compete in the 41st state tournament to be held April 8-9 at UW-Oshkosh.

The team heads back to state after a six-year dry spell and a loss early in regionals last year.

On March 5, the Rockets finished regionals with a title in Verona.
