MONROE - Names of the candidates for city and county elections April 3 were announced Tuesday. Candidates had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to file their nomination papers and sign a declaration of candidacy to qualify for a spot on the ballot next spring.

City of Monroe

Voters in Ward 5 and Ward 7 in the City of Monroe will have an extraordinary number of choices of aldermanic candidates in April.

The Common Council failed Tuesday to pass a motion for a February primary in those wards.

Voters in Ward 7, in downtown Monroe, will find four candidates on the ballot. Incumbent Thurston Hanson, Louis Armstrong, Robert McCarthy and Tony Gratz are vying for the seat.

Ward 5 voters will have three candidates: Incumbent Charles Koch, Tyler Schultz and Scott Golackson.

The remaining wards have only one candidate each running on the ballot: Tom Miller is running in Ward 1, located in the far northeast corner of Monroe; incumbent Michael Boyce is seeking re-election in Ward 3 in the city's southeast side; and Charles Schuringa is running in Ward 9, on the city's far west side.

Voters in the city's odd-numbered wards will be electing aldermen in April for a two-year term.

Michael Boyce is also challenging incumbent Bill Ross in the mayor's race for a two-year term.

Green County Board of Supervisors

Only one seat on the Green County Board of Supervisors is being contested.

Paula Vestin and Jeff Williams will compete for the seat in District 13, covering the Town of Spring Grove, where there is no incumbent due to redistricting.

Ted Fahey will be running unopposed in District 26, northern Town of New Glarus and western Town of Exeter, also with no incumbent due to redistricting.

New candidates, running unopposed, are Beth Luchsinger in District 28, the southern portion of the Village of New Glarus, and Betty Grotophorst in District 29, covering the southeastern portion of the Town of Exeter and part of the Town of Brooklyn.

Incumbents are running for the remaining districts. Note that the April 3 election will be the first since 2011 redistricting, so many supervisors have different district numbers. All County Board Supervisors will be elected for two-year terms to begin on April 17, 2012. The remaining candidates are:
