Wilbur Ervin " Wil" Lengel, 78, of Juda, Wisconsin died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, in his home following a extended illness.

He was born October 21, 1929 in Burlington, Co., the son of Joseph and Mary (Heinze) Lengel.

After being awarded a football scholarship to The University of Denver, Wil received a degree in Business and Economics and a Master's degree in Education from Northern Illinois University.

Wil married Maud Ditmars on June 8, 1957 in Washington, Kansas. They settled in Elgin, Illinois where they would raise 5 children, David, Lisa, Tim, Cindy and Todd.

Wil began his education career teaching in Stockton, Illinois. Wil was an elementary school principal in Elgin, Illinois district U46 for 31 years retiring in 1988.

He and his wife Maud volunteered extensively for PADS, an interfaith effort to provide food and shelter to the homeless, he helped build a church in Puerto Rico through a church work camp, and he sat on the board of Pinecrest Retirement Center in Mt. Morris, Illinois.

After retiring, Wil moved to Juda, Wisconsin and worked with his son Todd in beef stock farming.

Wil is survived by his wife of 51 years, Maud; two daughters, Lisa (John) Loveless of Monroe, Wis. and Cindy (Tony) Russ of Inverness, Fla.; two sons, Tim (Janice) Lengel of Floyd's Knobs, Ind. and Todd (Dawn) Lengel of Juda, Wisconsin. His beloved grandchildren, Joe, Richard, Brandon, Kelsey, Jacob, Leah, Anthony and Sawyer. Also his sister-in-law, Virginia Lengel of Burlington, Co.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David; two brothers, Galen and Edgar; and his sister, Ruth.

Wil's memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in Church of the Brethren, 777 W. Pleasant Street, Freeport, Illinois. Rev. Lisa Fike, pastor, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be made to Global Food Crisis.
