On July 21, 1957 Walt married the former Judith C. Disch in New Glarus, WI.
Walt was a self-educated man and worked several skilled jobs during his lifetime. He started driving truck for Frank Kubly in the late 1950s. During the 1960s, he owned and operated his own excavation company, hauled milk for Dobson out of Orfordville during the winter months, managed local trucks for IGA out of Chicago, did road construction for McGuire and then went back to cheese hauling for Armour. In 1973 he bought his first Peterbilt and leased on to Diamond Transportation, Racine. There he hauled flatbed freight of all types for the next 25 years. He also liked to "tinker" in his garages and sheds, and was very skilled at working on mechanical items, such as motors and the like.
