Virginia L. "Ginny" Abbey

Virginia L. "Ginny" Abbey, age 81 of Shawano, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday morning, October 22, 2017.

Ginny was born July 26, 1936 in Bloomington, Illinois, a daughter of the late Claude and Audrey (Miller) Otto. She graduated from Normal Community High School in 1954. On December 18, 1954 she was united in marriage to Dana Abbey in Normal. Following their marriage the couple moved to Fort Riley, Kansas where Dana was stationed in the United States Army.

After Dana's service in the United States Army, the couple moved to Rockford, Illinois. While Dana established and built a certified public accounting firm, Ginny generously gave her time to the community as organist for Altersgate Methodist Church, and as President of the Jenny Lind Society, the Volunteer Auxiliary of Swedish American Hospital. The couple enjoyed spending their free time at Mauh-Nau-Tee-See Country Club in Rockford and at their cabin in Green Lake, Wisconsin.

In 1976 the couple moved to Monroe, Wisconsin where Dana expanded his public accounting practice. After Dana's death in 1979, Ginny began working as a saleswoman for Hughs Mobile Homes. In 1985 she relocated to Shawano, and continued her career for many years with North Country Homes.

Ginny is a member of the Shawano United Methodist Church where she was active on the building committee, board of directors, and other various positions. She loved her grandchildren and was so proud of their accomplishments. Ginny volunteered at the local food pantry, was a member of the Red Hat Society, of which she was a founding member, and was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Ginny also enjoyed spending time on Shawano Lake and the winter seasons in Venice, Florida.

Survivors include her children, Kent (Tina) Abbey of Apex, NC and Kimberly (Steve) Buettner of Shawano; her grandchildren, Alissa Abbey of Apex, NC, Jeffrey Buettner of Shawano, and Dana Buettner of Plover, WI; and her step-brother, Richard (Margie) Baum of Bloomington, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dana, and her devoted and loving companion for the past 14 years, Fred Forquer.

A memorial service for Virginia L. Abbey will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Shawano United Methodist Church - Church on the Hill. Pastor Claudia Deede will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the time of service. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 30th at Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe, Wisconsin.
