MADISON - A New Glarus woman has been identified as the pedestrian killed after being struck by a Metro bus on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus Tuesday.
Maureen E. Grant, 58, of New Glarus died as a result of injuries she sustained in the accident, according to the Dane County Medical Examiner's office.
The Wisconsin State Journa reports Grant was walking to work at Memorial Library on Wednesday morning when police say she was struck by the bus turning left.
Grant was in the crosswalk and had a walk signal.
The City of Madison says the bus was driven by a woman who is a two-year employee of Metro Transit.
Grant's family has released a statement thanking people for their sympathy while also asking for privacy.
The Madison Police Department, the State Patrol and Metro Transit are investigating.
Metro spokesman Mick Rusch told the newspaper that the bus driver was driving an empty bus back to the garage.
Rusch says the female driver will be taken for drug and alcohol testing as part of federal requirements.
The driver is on paid leave.
The bus was impounded and inspected by the Wisconsin State Patrol to make sure everything was working mechanically.
