DARLINGTON - A Shullsburg company agreed to pay $2,500 for violating state air pollution laws, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden Jeff King, Darlington, announced Tuesday.
Steven Humphrey, owner of Humphrey Transport and Towing, burned scrap metal, tires, auto parts, a bench seat and treated lumber, among other things, on two occasions at his business, 19307 Dunbarton Road.
King said Humphrey didn't have a license to operate a solid waste facility when he burned the items.
Open burning can cause tiny particles to be released into the air and can lead to respiratory infection, reduction in the volume of air inhaled, and also impair the lung's ability to use that air, King said. It can cause asthma attacks in some people as well.
Department of Natural Resources air management engineer Maria Hill, Dodgeville, assisted King with investigating the case.
Wisconsin Assistant Attorney General Mary Batt represented the case and Lafayette County Circuit Court Judge William D. Johnston approved the settlement.
Anyone interested in learning more about Wisconsin's open burning law can call Hill at the Dodgeville DNR Office at (608) 935-1928.
