Sally A. Urban, age 86, a longtime Monroe, Wisconsin resident, died at home Thursday, April 16, 2009, from Parkinson's disease.
She was born in Fort Atkinson, WI on March 11, 1923, to Blanche (Vandewater) and Girth Linke. She spent her early school years in Madison, moving back to Fort Atkinson for junior high and high school, graduating in 1940. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating with a degree in dietetics in 1944. After graduation, she worked on the West Coast and moved to Santa Barbara, Calif.
On January 25, 1947, Sally married Joseph Urban in Fort Atkinson. The couple first lived in Janesville, where Sally worked as a dietitian at Mercy Hospital and Joe worked at WCLO radio. In 1951 they moved to Monroe, where Joe helped put WEKZ on the air. The couple raised their six children in Monroe and were members of St. Victor Catholic Church. When their youngest child entered high school, Sally started work as a dietitian at St. Clare Hospital. After age 50, she canoed the Boundary Waters, downhill skied with friends until 1996, and then enjoyed traveling, square dancing, line dancing, and gardening. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and started recycling in Monroe.
Surviving is her husband, Joseph; sons, Peter Urban of Clinton, MA, Paul (Kay) Urban of Monroe, WI, David (Alice) Urban of Hudson, WI, Matthew (Rhonda) Urban of Monroe, WI; daughters, Susan Urban of Middleton, WI and Mary Jo (Donn) Groom of Kaikohe, New Zealand; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Vanda Wiegert of Beaver Dam, WI; and many nieces and nephews. We all feel lucky to have been loved by her and we will miss her dearly.
