Ruth Nelson, age 88, of rural Argyle, WI, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 29, 1923 in Darlington, WI, the daughter of Leo and Alice (Burgess) Howard. Ruth graduated from Darlington High School in 1941 and attended Madison Business College. She was united in marriage to Paul Nelson on May 5, 1945 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. Ruth lived on the family farm for 67 years.

Ruth is survived by four children: Marilyn (James) Wendelburg of Sussex, WI, Louise Engel of Greenbush, WI, Phillip Nelson of rural Argyle, and Donald (Kathey) Nelson of Thousand Oaks, CA; nine grandchildren: Susan Wendelburg Hurst of Milwaukee, WI, Sara Wendelburg of New Berlin, WI, Michelle Nelson Belizario of San Francisco, CA, Travis Nelson of Mare Island, CA, Jacob Engel of Dodgeville, WI, Laura Engel/Brown of Greenbush, WI, Katherine Engel of Berkeley, CA, Emily Engel of Madison, WI, and Rebecca Engel of Sheboygan, WI; nine great-grandchildren: Robbie and Tess Hurst of Milwaukee, Gabe, Ben, and Elise Engel of Dodgeville, Ashleigh, Maddie, and Alex Brown of Greenbush, and Cayden Belizario of San Francisco; three sisters: Mary Bandi of Albany, WI, Lucille Howard of Monroe, WI, and Grace Sullivan of Humbolt, TN; one brother-in-law: Werner Weissenfluh of Monroe; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Paul on September 2, 1998; three sisters: Jane Kuhlman, Juanita Olson, and Hazel Weissenfluh; and one great-granddaughter: Natasha Drew Brown.

Ruth was a member of Apple Grove Lutheran Church, past president of its Women of ELCA, past Sunday School superintendent and teacher, and past choir member. She was an active member of the Tri-Town Homemakers Club for 43 years. Ruth enjoyed traveling, gardening, and caring for her family. She will always be fondly remembered as a kind and gentle person and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Apple Grove Lutheran Church, 14501 Apple Grove Church Road in rural Argyle with Rev. Daniel L. Bohlman officiating. Burial will be in Apple Grove Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Argyle. A visitation will be held Friday, March 23, 2012, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home, 801 East Milwaukee Street in Argyle and Saturday, March 24, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
