Ruth Gibbons, age 91, of Monroe, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

Ruth was born on June 26, 1924 in Indianola, IA; the daughter of Violet (Stauffacher) Wilkinson. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1942; and married Bernard Gibbons on Sept. 4, 1943.

Bernard and Ruth owned/operated Gibbons Fifth Avenue Cleaners; which was destroyed, along with their home, in the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado.

Ruth was also employed, during her lifetime in Monroe, by United Telephone Company, Swiss Colony, and Monroe Clinic.

She was a past president of St. Victor's Altar Society, VFW Auxiliary, and American Legion Auxiliary. She also served as secretary on the Monroe School Board.

She is survived by her six children: Greg (Mary) Gibbons of Oshkosh; Debbie Haeft of Evansville; Jeff (Jane) Gibbons of Albany; Jennifer (Bob) Duxstad of Monroe; Peggy Frint of Monroe; Joe (Kelly) Gibbons of Moore, OK; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and a brother Keith (Ann) Wilkinson of Ashborn, VA.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 72 years Bernard; her parents; a daughter, Sharon Kay; grandchildren Shari Lynn Popanz, Colleen (Gibbons) Daugherty, Anthony Gibbons; and Aunt Dorothy (Bill) Cullen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor's Church with Monsignor Larry Bakke celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, May 13th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Dr., and 18th Ave. in Monroe.

A luncheon at American Legion will follow internment at Calvary Cemetery in Monroe.

We will miss you so much Mom, but will find joy & peace knowing Dad & you are together again with God and our young ones in heaven.
