Russell S. Swingen, age 83, of rural Argyle, WI, passed away Thursday,
May 15, 2014, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe, WI. He was born July 21, 1930 in Forward, Perry Township, Dane County, WI, near the family farm to Helmer Clarence and Clara Eliza (Knudtson) Swingen. He was baptized and confirmed at Perry Lutheran Church. Russell attended Forward School. He lived in Forward, where he farmed on the family farm until he purchased his farm in Argyle in 1950. Russell was united in marriage to Virginia Flannery on April 16, 1955 at Argyle United Methodist Church. He also worked at Argyle Industries from 1972 until 1995, when he retired. Russell later returned to Argyle Industries until they closed.
Russell is survived by his wife: Virginia at home; two children: Julie (Mark) Scheppele of Monroe and Randy (Tina) Swingen of Argyle; one granddaughter: Christine (Ben) Slager of Montague, MI; one great-grandson: Aaron Slager; one sister-in-law: Marlene Swingen of Rice Lake, WI; one brother-in-law: Donnie (Pat) Flannery of rural Argyle; two nieces: Sharon (Rick) Feiertag of Rice Lake and Debbie (Michael) Plishka of Lake Villa, IL; one nephew: Dan Flannery of Brodhead, WI; and special friends: Shirley Brunkow and Ron and Chris Faith and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Herbert Swingen on October 21, 2013.
Russell was a member of Argyle United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 until 1953 in the 79th Construction Batillion Company C. Russell enjoyed traveling to the Veterans 79th Construction Batillion reunion every year attending all but two. He was proud of receiving various awards and accommodations including the Knip Young Ne award and medal. He was a collector and restorer of pedal tractors. Russell liked Allis Chalmer tractors.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Blanchardville United Methodist Church, 101 North Main Street in Blanchardville, WI, with Rev. Irv Case officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in rural Argyle with military rites to be accorded by Argyle American Legion Post #251. A visitation will be held Monday, May 19, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home, 801 East Milwaukee Street in Argyle.
