Mr. Royal W. (Hickory) Ziltner, age 87, of New Glarus passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at the New Glarus Home. He was born February 3, 1924 to his parents Fridolin and Sarah (Wichser) Ziltner of New Glarus. Royal graduated from New Glarus High School in 1942. On March 10, 1943, he entered the United States Army and then served as a Sergeant with the 164th Anti-Tank Company in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, and the Bronze Arrowhead Service Medal. On September 14, 1947 he was united in marriage to Doris Irene Schulz at Monticello, WI. Royal and Doris owned and operated Roy's Market in New Glarus for over forty years. He was also a member of the Swiss United Church of Christ, the Stuessy-Kuenzi American Legion Post #141, and a former member of the New Glarus Village Board. Hickory was an avid bowler. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed attending their sporting events and activities.
Royal is survived by his two sons Cary (Shirly) Ziltner of Darlington, WI and Jon (Judy) Ziltner of New Glarus, WI; two daughters Sandy (Guy) Nelson of New Glarus and Sharon (Fritz) Durst of Waunakee, WI; nine grandchildren, Cynthia (Matt) Crist, Tiffany (Nick) Miller, Bradley Ziltner, Kimberly (Chuck) Burton, Kristina Ziltner, Christopher Nelson, Casey Nelson (Buntha Hem), Ryan Durst and Jeremy Durst; great-grandchildren Ross, Kylie, and Ryker Crist, Casey, Luke, and Nicole Burton and Zoë Nelson; two sisters Ruth Wenger and Gloria Thompson of New Glarus.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife and soul mate Doris, parents, brothers Emil and Werner Ziltner and sisters Wilma Zentner and Julie Crickenberger, his stepfather John Stuessy and a stepbrother Russell Stuessy.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Swiss United Church of Christ, 18 5th Ave., New Glarus, WI with the Rev. Craig Jan-McMahon officiating with burial in the Swiss Church Cemetery, New Glarus with full military honors.
Relatives and friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Ave., New Glarus, WI.
