Roy A. Block, age 89 of Monroe, died on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at his home. He was born on May 4, 1919 in Jordan Township, the son of Edmond and Martha (Unger) Block. He attended the Blaine Country School. Roy and Dorothy Beach were married on November 24, 1943 at St. John's United Church of Christ. He and his wife farmed in the Jordan and Cadiz Townships until their retirement and moving to Monroe. Roy was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, a lifetime member of the Farm Bureau, serving as secretary for several years. He was also a 4-H leader and member of the Forestry Center. Roy enjoyed the life of a farmer, but most of all he loved seeing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing cards and family gatherings of all kinds.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Block of Monroe; children, Russell (Lin) Block of Monroe, Jerry (LaVonne) Block of Turlock, CA, Beverly (Richard) Wehinger of Monroe; grandchildren, Kevin Wehinger, Sheryl (Nick) Vita, Krystal (Jason) Zahradka, all of Monroe, Kerryne (Jeff) Kraemer of Fitchburg, Heidi Block of Pleasant View, Utah and Chris Block of San Francisco, CA; also 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Frederick and Chester Block; and a sister, Dorothy Block Kooremen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at St. John's United Church of Christ. Officiating will be Rev. William T. Mike Heath, with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home. A memorial fund is being established in Roy's memory.
