BRODHEAD - Robert J. Ryan, age 86 of Brodhead, died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Woods Crossing. He was born on June 3, 1923 in Mineral Point, WI, the son of Arthur and Hattie (Lindsey) Ryan. He graduated from Monroe High School. Bob married Lela Duerst on June 27, 1946. Bob worked from 1943 to 1953 for the Monroe Police Department as a dispatcher. In March of 1953 he started his own shoe repair company "Bob's Shoe Repair" in Brodhead. Bob was still working in April, after 56 years, rebuilding shoes to orthopedic prescriptions for clients across the United States.
He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was especially fond of Buicks and he and Lela enjoyed many trips to Door County and traveling throughout the country by car.
He is survived by his wife, Lela of 63 years; two sisters, Mildred Drye of Monroe and Mary Patricia (Alan) Rockafield of St. Germain, WI; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Margaret Adams and a half brother, Howard Ryan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Brodhead, with Fr. Michael Moon officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Monticello. A visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
