Raymond Gene Snider age 68 of Browntown died on Monday, June 16, 2014 at his home after a long and courageous battle with heart disease. He was born on January 9, 1946 in Melrose Park, Illinois, the son of Jean (Barrett) and Everett O. Snider. Ray grew up in Hinsdale, Illinois the second of six children.
His strong work ethic was instilled at an early age when all the siblings took part in building a one-room shack into a large, beautiful home in the country. Life was never an easy road for Ray as a young man, but he made what he felt was the right decision to enlist in the U.S. Army. He served from June 22, 1966 to January 24, 1969 with the 3/34th Artillery, 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant E6. He earned the Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He also received the Soldier's Medal in commendation for heroism when an ammunition storage bunker received a direct hit and began to burn, putting the entire base in danger. With rounds still raining into the bunker, he singlehandedly began extinguishing the blaze, cut off burning canvas, and despite being burned continued until the fire was brought under control.
In 1974 Ray met Lynda Doose and they were married in 1975. When he became a father he decided that he wanted to raise his son in a safe place, away from the city. The family moved to Monroe in May 1976 and he began working for R. Mueller Cheese Factory Equipment. Before retiring due to health in 2000, Ray's maintenance skills took him to Monroe Clinic, Family Fresh Pack, and finally Wisconsin Cheese Group.
He is survived by his son, John Snider; and his former wife, Lynda. Ray and Lynda often told people that they got along great as long as they weren't living under the same roof. He was predeceased by a brother John, a sister Carol, and his parents.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Ray's life to be held on Friday, June 27, 2014, at 11:30 a.m., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, followed by a luncheon at the Monroe Moose Lodge. Private burial will be in Saucerman Cemetery, Cadiz Township. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund will be established in his name.
The family wants to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. David Murray, Rachel and Nancy at the Wm. S. Middleton Veterans' Administration Hospital Cardiology Department for all the years of care physically and emotionally, and to Wayne Foesch for being Ray's friend.
