GREEN COUNTY - The New Glarus and Belleville Police Departments participate in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over"enforcement effort Aug. 19 to Sept. 5.

Drunk driving is one of the most destructive and deadly crimes in Wisconsin, officials said in a press release.

Last year, 220 people were killed and more than 3,500 injured in nearly 5,800 alcohol-related traffic crashes.

Under the state law enacted last year, first offense of operating while intoxicated drivers who are convicted with a blood or breath alcohol level of .15 or higher and all repeat drunk drivers are required to have an ignition interlock device on every vehicle they own, have registered in their name, or drive.

Ignition interlock devices ensure drivers are sober before they can start their vehicle, officials said.

The law also makes first offense OWI a criminal offense if there is a passenger under 16 in the vehicle.

There were 40,000 drunk driving convictions in Wisconsin last year.

Every officer in the agencies follow a zero tolerance for drunk drivers.
